getting real sick of my trane system and hvac company am i being screwed

Back in 2017 we got a new AC installed.

It is a Trane XV18.

We have had a ridiculous amount of problems with it and have paid at least half the original cost in maintenance.

We had them out today and dropped $1200, and now our system is showing a "Service Required" message and error codes on the unit, so they're coming out tomorrow to look at it again.

In addition, they said that our ductwork was in bad shape.

they showed me pictures and it looked like the ductwork had been cut open in multiple places.

one of the boxes (sorry I don't know what they're called) had a large piece of one of the sides cut out of it.

It didn't look like animals chewing on it, it looked like someone took a knife to it.

I feel a little sketchy about that, but the people we bought the house from did say that the original owners caused a lot of damage since the house was foreclosed on.

So maybe they went up to the attic and cut into the duct work? I don't want to accuse the HVAC company of anything improper.

but it just feels a little sketchy.

On top of that, they gave me a ballpark estimate to redo the duct work of 12-15k.

This is a 2100 sq ft.

house.

I'm ultimately just frustrated at this point and am on the verge of saying screw it and buying another AC system from another company.

Does any of this sound abnormal? Is 12-15k reasonable for redoing the ductwork in a house this size in Central FL?
